Swimming pool
From HUG Wiki
We would like to have a pool on campus with at least 2 full length swimming lanes. We are not fond of chemicals and the impractical need to keep everything sterile. This page is where we will design a swimming pool facility that fits the ARC community. It will not be sterile, but it will be healthy.

Pool and water flow
- The building will have a tall south wall that is all greenhouse.
- Used for heat and light and to grow many plants
- Conceptually the pool will be long (for the lap lanes) and somewhat narrow (to fit into a reasonably sized room).
- The narrowness implies that the pool will have two long walls. The two ends can have shallow entry if we wish.
- One end will have a shallow kids play area.
- Water will flow from the kid's end of the pool through a jungle of plants, then a sand filter and into the opposite end of the pool.
- Corrie catfish and snails will populate the pool and plant area.
- The pool bottom will be sand.
- The play area around the pool will be sand.
- We can assume that sand will get into everything, except the exit door.
- Showers will be located on a boardwalk near the door.
- Water for showers will come from the exit of the jungle water loop, through sand and charcoal filters
- Drain water will be routed through filtering plants before re-entering the jungle loop.
Maintenance
Ideally the building will be made of cob. The walls and ceiling will have many 4 inch cob air tubes about an inch behind the surface. Small holes from the surface into the tubes will allow dry air to diffuse into the room.
- ?? The cob walls might handle the moisture like earth does; absorbing and diffusing the moisture; not getting moldy. ??
- We will need a reliable low energy source of dry air
- Sand can be periodically cleaned with some simple custom made tools that sift and rinse it.
The feel of the place
The plants, and sand floor, and the hole filled cob walls will all absorb sound like crazy.
- This should make very pleasant acoustics. The sound of water running will be easy to hear.
- Light streaming into the jungle area will accent the massive and graceful cob arches.
Hot Tub
- Water runs from jungle flow, warms in heat exchanger, into tub.
- Water flows out of tub, cools off in heat exchanger, exits to jungle flow.
The hot tub is the only part of the room that operates near human body temperature. Pathogens could linger if we are not careful.
- Hot tub and plumbing can be occasionally shocked by ozone
