"Native-based Perennial Polycultures"

What does this mean?

We want to grow as much food as possible in "ecosystems" that are similar to and based on what is growing in our particular part of northern Minnesota.

This depends on

  1. knowing what the native ecosystems are in this area
  2. finding ways of making these systems productive enough to feed us on a smaller area per person.

In this area we find, in our woods, many things that can be part of a food producing ecosystem. We have wild hazels, chokecherries, juneberries, blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, all growing together. We have many medicinal and edible herbs in the ground cover. In addition there are oaks and pines, that are not ideal food sources in their native forms, but we can grow other similar species that are productive and nutritious.
