Our 120' tall wind turbine was made possible with grant assistance through Minnesota Power. This variable speed wind turbine begins producing power with wind speeds at 10mph. The wind turbine limits rotation speeds once it hits 25 mph to prevent damage to the equipment. The Jacobs 20 kilowatt wind generator is wired directly into the power grid.
So far we have learned our Campus is not the ideal place for a wind generator. The heavy tree cover blocks a lot of the wind that would otherwise be powering the wind generator.
