The cob apartment provides several examples of the flexibility, durability and creativity that results from cob. Paul and Lynn intended to live in the apartment while working on the Campus plans, but decided too many learning opportunities would missed if the process was rushed. Thus the apartment is currently dubbed the “Mud Room.” We can mix and store materials close by and work on the apartment year round.

The current plan is that the mud room will become a livable apartment made entirely out of cob. The cob staircase, window art, and walls are in place and in various stages of completion. Future plans also involve creating kitchen cabinets, a sink, and even a bathtub out of cob.

The artwork at the bottom of the cob staircase demonstrates early experimentation with the artistic capabilities of cob and its response to being painted.. The paints vary in color and texture but all are homemade and allow moisture to pass through the walls, which maintains the health of the straw bales underneath
