Introduction

This page will contain information on projects that are going to be going continously on campus.

The Compost Pile

The compost pile before the sawdust toilet
Ray and Barb have built a compost pile on the north side of the building. It was originally built as two separate piles with storage in between. It quickly became two separate piles with a sawdust toilet in between. We are composting kitchen waste and anything else organic that we produce. The compost pile will also be composting humanure.
The Garden
Mostly we are growing trees this year. We wanted to get the trees in as soon as possible so that they would have a chance to grow and get big. Barb and Ray bought a whole bunch of little trees at a sale and put them all in the garden to protect them from animals. They will be moved when they get bigger.
Barb and Ray are also growing some vegetables and edible flowers.
The Green House
Ray and Barb would like to build a green house.
"Waste" Treatment
Introduction
"Waste Treatment" is kind of a misnomer. We don't see any waste, only resources. Our goal would be to use everything that is produced on campus.
Composting Toilet
Composting Toilet
The composting toilet before it was installed toilet
This is a commercial composting toilet with an electric fan in it. This toilet is more difficult to maintain than the sawdust toilet below. We found out early on that if the mixture is too dry it will have a definite odor. That was cleared up by adding more liquid. Now it is working well and doesn't have any odor.
It is installed inside the building in our experimental bathroom. We also have a full working standard bathroom in case the experimental one ever stops working.
Sawdust Toilet
Bucket Toilet
The sawdust toilet installed and working
This is done as described in the book The Humanure Handbook. It is a five gallon Home Depot bucket with a nice wood box and toilet seat. The Rubbermaid container next to it contains sawdust. Everytime the toilet is used enough sawdust is added to completely cover the waste put into the bucket. When the bucket is filled it is carefully emptied into the center of one of the compost piles. The bucket is rinsed carefully and all the water from rinsing it is also put into the compost pile. Then more sawdust is added over it. The waste must be completely covered with sawdust or it will start to smell. The sawdust traps in the odors and already has the bacteria required to break the waste down in it. It is really a slick system and not hard to maintain.
It is installed between the two compost piles outside the building.
