The North wall is simple and short, only 3 bales high. The South wall is complicated by windows and is 6 bales high. Placing 600 pound bales 18 feet high and keeping them stable is a challenge. Each of the 8 two story high picture windows will be held and protected by a serious piece of framework called a window buck. Each stack of bales will be stiffened and stabilized by window bucks on both ends. Essentially, this makes the South wall sort of a post and beam with straw infill. The rest of the walls are load bearing straw. Today was spent in our Pequot workshop assembling window bucks from 2x12s and plywood. Barb and Ray cutting plywood. One finished buck is lying on its side behind Barb. Note the added double cross bracing to keep the buck square during installation. Ryan and Jared got the cushy indoor part of the job. Here they are assembling a buck. [ Edited by Paul Hunt on Tue, 11 Nov 2003 22:53:56 -0600 ]
